1978: the term "ecocriticism" is coined by William Rueckert in "Literature and Ecology: An Experiment in Ecocriticism"
1980s: postprocess turn
1983-1985: "composition began an ecological approach to understanding discourse, seeing writers as con-tributing members
of larger systems" (didn't involve looking at the environment specifically) (575)
1989: Cheryl Glotfelty "urged the adoption of the term [ecocriticism] as a critical approach to studying nature writing" at the
Western Literature Association (569).
Late 1980s, early 1990s: the investigation of environmental rhetoric emerged (coincided with the popularity of ecocriticism)
1999: "a single roundtable specifically addressed issues of importance to ecocomposition (although a few others used the term
"ecology" in their titles)" at CCCC (567).
2000: ASLE-CCCC had its first meeting (the CCCC roundtable "initiated a public conversation directed toward ecocomposition
and called for the formation of ASLE-CCCC, a special interest group supported by the Association for the Study of
Literature and Environment" (567).
** Ecocomposition is credited with coming about in the last 1990s.
